School Supply Drive
It's back to school time! Summer is coming to a close and it's time to stock up on school supplies. Labor Day sales are a great opportunity for a family outing to pick up school supplies for kids who might not be able to get all the supplies they need for the new school year.
When I was growing up, shopping for school supplies was one of my favorite things. I especially loved new art supplies! Our new partner, Cross-Cultural Ministries Inc., in Atlanta, helps kids - specifically with education. Cross-Cultural Ministries, Inc. enables and empowers disadvantaged children, youth and adults through educational and discipleship programs in community-based centers in partnership with individuals, churches and organizations. They rent apartments or use an apartment’s community room to offer services within the community so that they are able to empower more people.
In DeKalb County, 140 languages and dialects are represented in the classrooms. Where we serve, schools are overcrowded, understaffed, under-resourced, old and outdated, with 35 or more students to one teacher in a class.
Many students who attend our programs are born in the US, but 85% are from illiterate, non-English speaking homes. Discouraged in school and lacking in support at home, 60% drop out by 8th grade, often either pregnant or in gangs and turn to a life of crime and violence.
Where CCM Comes In
With two small rented apartments and a common room, we bring our volunteers and resources into the communities, currently serving 160 students every day. Our efforts have seen 94% of our students graduate from high school.
You can send or deliver school supplies directly to CCM: 5935 New Peachtree Road | Doraville, GA 30340 or coordinate with Trouble Clothes for collection (email us firstname.lastname@example.org).
So while you are out hitting up the sales this weekend, grab a couple extra things and give back. Interested in doing more? CCM needs volunteers as well.
Looking for a way to give back? Volunteering is a great option. Individuals and groups volunteer for the weekly school-year educational programs or for special events and summer programs.
Reach out and impact a life! Make a difference!
Don't have time to shop? As always, you can support our partners by making a donation on the Trouble Clothes website.
